TOPIC DETAILS

Lecture I: What happens in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

• Also known as the Newborn Intensive Care, Intensive Care Nursery, and/or Special Care Nursery placed when babies are born prematurely, difficulties during delivery, show signs of a problem in the first few days of life
• Services provided in the NICU (Occupational therapists work with feeding and movement issues with the infants and their parents)
• Educating parents and Home programs

Lecture/Lab I: Inside & Outside of the Home

• Making the most of the environment at home vs. school vs. community
• Home Programs for parents-working with teacher, caretaker/giver, parents, occupational therapists

Lecture II: Language, Music, & Playtime

• Communication/Social skills
• Creative/Dramatic Play

Lecture/Lab II: Special Toys & Camps

• Recreation/leisure/special needs camps
• Appropriate toys for kids with disabilities
• Assistive technology/devices
